Abstract

The destruction of 2-chloropyridine (2-CPY) was studied by means of ultraviolet irradiation at 254 nm. Photolytic and photocatalytic experiments were conducted on 2-CPY aqueous solutions in a batch reactor with internal recycle in laminar flow and under agitation at 323 K at solution ambient pH and at controlled pH conditions, with use and in the absence of radical scavenger. Solution volume was in the range of 0.25-0.55 L and initial substrate concentrations were in the range of 2.6-4.45 mmol L-1 and, where applicable, using 1g L-1 TiO2 (P-25), suspended in the liquid. A global kinetic model for the combined photolytic/photocatalytic diminution of 2-CPY was developed and a preliminary model for the photolytic diminution of 2-CPY as a function of 2-CPY quantity in the water. Preliminary genotoxicity tests indicated mutagenic effects.
