Prototyping new concepts beyond 4G – The Fraunhofer Open5GCore

  • Thomas Magedanz

    Thomas Magedanz is full professor in the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty at the Technische Universität Berlin, Germany, leading the chair for Next Generation Networks. In addition, he is director of the “Next Generation Network Infrastructures” division of the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS. In 2006, Prof. Magedanz has been assigned as Extraordinary Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Since 2007, he is also Visiting Professor to the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Computing at the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland.Since more than 20 years Prof. Magedanz is working in the convergence field of fixed and mobile telecommunications, the Internet and information technologies, which resulted in many international R&D projects centered around Next Generation Service Delivery Platforms prototyped in a set of globally recognized open technology testbeds. In 2007 Prof. Magedanz joined the European FIRE (Future Internet Research and Experimentation) Expert Group. In the course of his research activities he published more than 250 technical papers/articles. In addition, Prof. Magedanz is senior member of the IEEE, and editorial board member of several journals.

    , Giuseppe Carella

    Giuseppe Carella received his M.Sc. in Engineering of Computer Science from the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna in 2011. During his studies he focalised on next generation network infrastructure, especially in IMS services, like presence and messaging. He realised his Master thesis, “QoS-aware brokering support for IMS Infrastructures in cloud”, working at Fraunhofer FOKUS focusing on IMS and cloud computing, as one of the first work realised in the context of Network Function Virtualization (NFV). In 2012 he joined the Next Generation Networks (AV) team at the Technical University Berlin, where he started working on Future Internet projects like OpenLab and BonFIRE. He is mainly interested in new network architectures, like the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and the Evolved Packet Core (EPC), and he has a strong background in cloud computing technologies. He is currently involved as Software Engineer in the development of the OpenSDNCore platform, and involved in different European projects.

    , Marius Corici

    Marius Corici received his Diploma in the Science of Systems and Computers – Computers Engineering from the Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania in 2005. He joined the Next Generation Network Infrastructures (NGNI) competence center of Fraunhofer FOKUS Institute in 2005. His research work includes multiple patent applications submitted in the area of IP network architectures and multiple publications in the area of Next Generation Mobile Networks in collaboration with various industry partners.

    , Julius Mueller

    Julius Mueller studied computer science at the Freie Universität Berlin and wrote his diploma thesis about NGN/IMS and Peer to Peer (P2P) system integration. In 2009 he joined the chair “Architektur der Vermittlungsknoten (AV)” at the electrical engineering and computer sciences faculty within the Technische Universität Berlin. Mr. Mueller holds a PhD (Dr.-Ing.) degree that he received from TU Berlin in 2014 in the scope of Cross Layer Optimization for Next Generation Networks and Future Internet. In particular his research focuses on the evolution of NGNs towards the Future Internet (FI), where he is investigating Evolved Packet Core (EPC), Software-Defined-Networks (SDN), Policy Control and Flow Based Charging (PCC) and Cross Layer Optimization. Since February 2013 he joined the group NGNI in Fraunhofer FOKUS on supporting the research and developments in the scope of the OpenEPC and Open5GCore projects. He is leading the Software-Defined-Networking developments of FOKUS and AV and coordinates the application of SDN concepts in telecommunication networks.

Abstract

The 5th Generation of mobile networks (5G) is expected to be rolled out by 2020. New and revolutionary applications are already being envisioned, real-time control of machines, the Tactile Internet for wireless, Industry 4.0, the Internet of Things and self-driving cars, among others.

To make this possible important enhancements and improvements in today's existing telecommunication technologies form an end-to-end perspective are required. Early testing and fast prototyping of new approaches and solutions will help to shape the evolving technologies. One of the technical enablers for 5G are two concepts based on the softwarisation and virtualisation of the core network, known as Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation, NFV. Fraunhofer FOKUS has set up the Open5GCore testing environment to start shaping, together with its partners, the nascent 5G technologies by addressing these topics together with other relevant technological developments. After a short motivation, the architecture of the open5GCore is presented, followed by a functional description of supported features.
