The LEGOMEDIC launch symposium (21st January 2013, University of Namur, Belgium): microreactors and flow chemistry in fine chemical and biopharmaceutical research and industry

LEGOMEDIC is the first major joint public-private initiative in the area of microreactors and flow chemistry in the Wallonia region of Belgium. In order to kick off the project with a focus on its scientific aspects and their industrial relevance, and as a tribute to this vibrant and fast-growing field, the consortium will organize a 1-day symposium held at the University of Namur.

The aim of this symposium is to gather local and European actors in the area of microreactors and flow chemistry – equipment and service providers, as well as users – around a high-level scientific program that features some of Europe’s key players in the field, and which will allow participants to follow the state of the art of this fast-growing discipline. The day’s program will further highlight the importance of continuous manufacturing and microreaction technology in the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and the impact of such innovative technologies on the development of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry in Europe.

Attendance is free and open to all scientific audiences from industry and academia, including graduate and under-graduate students.

Graduate students are especially encouraged to participate in order to familiarize themselves with the field and its wide-ranging implication. They will also be able to get a nearly hands-on experience of flow chemistry thanks to equipment demonstrations by the event’s sponsors.

The symposium will be held at the University of Namur on 21st January 2013.

Additional activities

The symposium will feature several short presentations from microreactor and flow chemistry equipment manufacturers and users. In order to allow newcomers to the field and graduate student to get a real-life idea of what flow chemistry looks like and how it is done in practice, equipment demonstrations will take place and will be accessible to all participants.

In order to make sure that all participants can use this event to make numerous new contacts, exhibition booths will be placed in the area where coffee and lunch breaks take place. The breaks will favor networking, as will the closing drinks reception to which all participants are invited.

Venue

The city of Namur is the capital of the Wallonia region of Belgium, and hosts all the political and administrative services of Wallonia. Namur is a charming medieval city dominated by one of Europe’s largest citadels, which is its main tourist attraction.

It is ideally located just south of Brussels, in the heart of Belgium’s French-speaking region, on the banks of the rivers Sambre and Meuse. It is easily accessible from all major European cities by car (the E411 and E42 highways), train (the Luxembourg-Brussels line) and plane (within one hour of the airports of Brussels, Charleroi and Liège).

The University of Namur was founded in 1831 by the Society of Jesus, and perpetuates the humanistic values of its founders through its teaching and research. It has grown to a total of over 5000 students and has developed significant research activities whilst maintaining its location in the heart of the city.
