Die Renaissance des Epos im romantischen Fresko

Abstract

If the nineteenth century is correctly seen as an age when a new and acute historical awareness reshaped the cultural sensibility, then it is no small irony that in the age of history, history painting was in crisis. One reaction to this crisis is the subject of this paper. Focusing on one of the Nazarenes’ most enchanting fresco projects, the decoration of the Casino Massimo in Rome after major epics by Dante, Tasso, and Ariosto, it traces the reworking and redefinition of history in painting by the German Nazarenes. In so doing, it examines the transformation of history painting into symbolic representation, and maps out the narrative structures, aesthetic strategies, and amalgamation of temporalities that carried this process and were produced in the process.

*Der unmittellbare Anstoß, meine Gedanken über die Renaissance des Epos in der Romantik in eine kohärente Form zu gießen, kam in Gestalt einer Konferenz an der Villa I Tatti, wo im Juni 2013 über Revision, Revival, and Return: The Italian Renaissance in the Nineteenth Century nachgedacht wurde. Ich möchte Alina Payne herzlich für die Einladung zu dieser animierenden Veranstaltung danken. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten meine Gedanken allerdings schon eine lange Gärungszeit hinter sich, die nicht zuletzt von den zahlreichen inspirierenden Unterhaltungen mit meiner ›Nazarene cohort‹ wichtige Impulse erhielt. Mein Dank gilt hier Nina Amstutz, Andrea Gottdang, Johannes Grave, Sabine Fastert, Mitchell Frank, France Nerlich, Christian Scholl, Norbert Suhr und Michael Thimann. Mein besonderer Dank gilt jedoch Frank Büttner, Kollege, Freund und Wegbereiter der Romantikforschung, der im Alter von nur 72 in diesem Jahr viel zu früh von uns geschieden ist. Dem Andenken an diesen fulminanten Cornelius-Forscher ist dieser Aufsatz gewidmet.
