Abstract

This article examines Herder’s and Reinhold’s metacritique of pure reason. Its context is Kant’s concept of the difference between phenomena and noumena. It is argued that Herder and Reinhold likewise seek to defend understanding (Verstand) and reason (Vernunft) as the faculty of apprehending the thing in itself. To this end, they both critizise Kant’s distinction of thinking and intuition from different angles. Herder and Reinhold likewise argue that the categories are necessary means to make thought sensible through natural language(s). It can be shown, however, that whereas Herder views language as a form and expression of understanding (Verstand), Reinholds attempts at establishing a pure philosophical language of thinking according to his systematical approach in the Synonymic (1812). It is argued that Herder, following his conception of natural language, could not have subscribed to that view.
