Ein Kapitel aus dem Buch Health, Media, and Communication

Abstract

When creating health communication, the health literacy level of the target audience is an important factor to consider. In this chapter, we explain why health literacy is important to society, health care, and individuals, and how the construct evolved over the years. Subsequently, we zoom in on information processing by describing related theories and how these insights can be used to develop accessible health information. Empirical studies that examined the impact of message design elements, such as text complexity or the use of visuals, in relation to health literacy are also discussed. The chapter ends with future research directions and implications for practice.
