About this book

The travelling students and scholars of the middle ages conjure up images of merry young wayfarers. But it turns out that this association is an imaginary idea that stems from powerful literary traditions. This study recapitulates in detail the genesis of this stereotype as a literary pattern, from the Carmina Burana and medieval tales to early modern police ordinances and student romanticism.
