Abstract

After a brief survey of recent research this article is focused on a comparative view of the theme of Lancelot and Guinevere in the verse and the prose version which reveal two fundamentally different approaches to the theme. The episodic structure of the metrical romance with its emphasis on individual adventure, conjointure and senefiance is opposed to the claim to totality of the prose version with its ideal of plurality, disjointure and collective adventure. The openness of this concept characterized by entrelacement and a labyrinthic plurality may be interpreted as the contrary of the ≫allegorie du salut≪ (Jacques Ribard) of verse romance and as decisive step towards modernity.
