Abstract
Kant’s Republicanism, the Human Being as an End in Itself and Human Rights. - In this chapter I analyze some of the essential features of Kant’s conception of republicanism and its relationship to his idea that human beings - due to their reasonable nature - are ends in themselves. I argue that an ideally republican constitution is, according to Kant, the only political order in which each and every citizen can be an end in itself juridically and not a mere means. I then propose a juridical construal of Kant’s idea of an end in itself, according to which the means-ends(‐in-itself) relations within an ideal republic are best captured by the following thought: whenever human rights are violated, the right-holders have been treated as mere things. My proposal remains open to many different accounts of the content and justificatory grounds of human rights.
