This study analyzes discourse in the emerging discipline of German didactics between 1871 and 1914. The works of Lessing, Goethe, and Schiller were not only considered first-rate subjects of instruction, but also helped shape teaching methodology. The author shows the extent to which the ideological core of historical didactics goes back to the reception of the "classics," and how didactic considerations influenced the reading of such works.

"Manuel Mackasares verdienstvolle Studie entstand im Rahmen einer Dissertation und wurde 2016 mit dem „Dissertationspreis Kulturwissenschaften“ der Ruhr-Universität Bochum ausgezeichnet. Dies verweist auf die Relevanz und Qualität der Forschungsleistung, die nicht nur neue Impulse für die historische Fachdidaktik speziell zur Konstituierung des Deutschunterrichts im Kaiserreich setzt, sondern auch belegt, inwiefern quellengestütztes Arbeiten tradierte und etablierte Allgemeinplätze in der Forschungsliteratur differenzieren und sogar falsifizieren kann. Es gelingt Mackasare dank einer wissenschaftlich präzisen, aber keineswegs zu abstrakten Sprache und dank einer hohen Reflexivität, über die zeitliche Diastase mancher Leitbegriffe durch semantische Überlegungen hinwegzuhelfen, sodass die dargestellten Sachverhalte plausibel und nachvollziehbar werden."
