The contributions of this volume study how the political decision for European integration came about in Germany and Italy after 1945 due to the experiences of the 20th century. What learning processes ‑ individual and collective ‑ inherent in this European integration made the nation state become increasingly problematic as fundamental form of political order? Convergences between Germany and Italy, which can be explained historically, become visible here as well as divergences due to differing cultural and historical experiences.

Germania e Italia hanno condiviso, sin dall'inizio del processo di integrazione europea, un'adesione che non ha mai mostrato ripensamenti o revisioni significative; si tratta effettivamente dei due stati fondatori che con maggiore decisione e convinzione hanno visto nell'unità europea uno strumento di realizzazione e di stabilizzazione della democrazia riconquistata dopo il tempo dei totalitarismi. Attraverso la presentazione di diversi personaggi italiani e tedeschi, il volume intende dare un contributo che aiuti a definire i termini di una scelta e di un percorso.
