The papers in this volume address a subject that is relevant, based not only on present-day psychological and neurological insights but also on a multitude of new interpretations in cultural studies and the humanities. They present a hitherto unique overview of the current discussion of emotion in the arts which transcends both disciplinary boundaries and the boundary between theory and practice. The authors represent brain research, psychoanalysis, philosophy, art history and art, music, literature and film studies.

The papers are aimed at both experts and interested non-specialists. They give a profound insight into the question of what can be understood by emotion and feeling and how emotions achieve their effects in the arts.

Klaus Herding is Professor of European Art History at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt/Main; Bernhard Stumpfhaus is art historian and member of the research project "Imagination and Surrealism" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
