On 18 October 1939, Matès wrote to Simje and Reizl in Argentina. The most recent letter he had received from Parczew was dated 28 August, four days before the German inva-sion. No news since from the parents. “Despite the current tense situation,” he wrote, “we’re all doing well. Yidess [sic] takes care of the house and child, which involves lots of effort. As for me, I get work every once in a while, I haven’t had much luck. . . . I have a good little baby, her name is Sizanne [sic] and she’ll soon be nine months old. She can already stand.” He re-frained from mentioning that he had just spent a month in jail, nor did he say anything about Idesa being three months pregnant; he closed by ask-ing for their news and adding this affectionate Yiddishism: “Farbleybt mir gezunt,” or “Stay in good health 5AUTUMN 1939: THE FOREIGNERS ENLIST
