275ReversalsThe Fifth Avenue Synagogue is not one of the city’s more spectacular houses of worship. Modest in scale and décor, it lacks the grandeur of Temple Emanu-El a few blocks to the north, and Central Synagogue, ten blocks to the south. But its membership may make it one of New York’s wealthiest congre-gations. Among its billionaire congregants are Ira Rennert, the chairman and chief executive of Renco Group, a private hold-ing company that invests in a wide range of industrial firms, including the largest magnesium producer in North America; financier Ron Perelman, chairman and biggest shareholder of Revlon; and Mortimer Zuckerman, real estate magnate and publisher.Wiesel had been going to this Orthodox synagogue almost every Sabbath since he moved to the Upper East Side, first to Third Avenue in the East Sixties and then to a more elegant address across from Central Park. He would show up at 9 a.m., 27
