CHAPTER3The Rise of the AntichristThe events of public policy are not the accidents or coinci-dences we are generally led to believe. They are planned.. . . Impulses of that sort do not spring from the humanheart, or for that matter from God’s heart. They spring, in-stead, from the depth of something that is evil.—Pat RobertsonThe unmistakable scent of what the Bible calls the anti-christ spirit is in the air. It was present at the tower ofBabel and at Sodom and Gomorrah. It was present in theFrench Revolution and in Nazi Germany. And it is presentin Europe and the United States today.—Pat RobertsonChristians in America have long sensed a special relationship withGod. The nation was created to perform the Lord’s will and surelywas chosen as the site of the Second Coming and God’s future king-dom. In preparation, Americans proclaimed their manifest destinyand built a transcontinental city upon the hill. When God deliv-ered power into American hands, the mission grew to encompassthe world. America was the Lord’s redeeming sword in the waragainst the forces of darkness. The Bible, particularly the Book ofRevelation, guided this vision and steeled men and women in theirpurpose. Each generation repeated the task of interpretation, jug-gling, juxtaposing, and merging biblical verses to expose codedmessages and to fit preconceptions. The resulting interpretive tem-plate transformed current events into fulfillment of biblical proph-ecies. Events, in turn, completed the circle, becoming new evidenceof the literal truth of Scriptures and the working of the divine plan. Not surprisingly, each generation found itself in the unique posi-tion of reaching the end of days and leaving history.66
