The similarities of the populous Cu2Sb and TlAsPd5 structures: Analysis of the building principles and formula of the TlAsPd5 structure

Abstract

Similarities of the populous Cu2Sb and TlAsPd5 structures (both tetragonal) are noted, and questions concerning the formation of the TlAsPd5 variant and its building principles and MXN5 formula are discussed. These are resolved in terms of the axial ratios (c/a) and interatomic distances found in phases with the TlAsPd5 structure, and the fact that so far it has been found to be formed only with N = Pd, Pt and Ga. The structure is seen to be a Parthé-type segmental intergrowth structure, the building principle of which is a geometrical packing of the atoms.
