Corruption in Greco-Roman Egypt
-
Patrick Sänger
Abstract
This article aims to provide an overview of the evidence for corruption available for Greco-Roman Egypt. The appeal of this lies in the special source material that can be used for this purpose: the vast number of documentary Greek papyri that have survived in Egypt provide a unique opportunity to approach questions about the visibility and extent of corruption (also) ‘from below’. In the following, the focus will be on the relevant lines of development in Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt, with a cursory mention of the late antique issues.
