“Where’s the Body?”: Performing Iphigenia at Aulis in New Zealand during the Pandemic (2020)

Abstract
When in-person teaching and rehearsals had to be relocated online in the early stages of New Zealand’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of Theatre Studies students at the University of Waikato overcame a series of challenges to perform and record their version of Euripides’ Iphigenia at Aulis (2020). This chapter is co-authored by Declan Patrick, a Theatre Studies scholar and theatre practitioner who expertly guided and encouraged these students on their learning journey, and Anastasia Bakogianni, who specialises in the reception of these ancient dramas on the modern stage and screen. Combining Patrick’s account of the processes involved with Bakogianni’s Classical Reception perspective, this chapter serves as an example of the advantages of collaboration in analysing performance. The authors reflect on what this experience taught them about pedagogy, theatrical practice, the theories, and methodologies they work with, and the reception of Greek Tragedy during a global health emergency.
